The thyroid is a gland located at the base of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight. Thyroid cancer develops when cells change or mutate. The abnormal cells begin multiplying in the thyroid and, once there are enough of them, they form a tumor. Many cases of thyroid cancer can be found early and have a good prognosis. Early thyroid cancer is found when patients see their doctors because of neck lumps or nodules they notice.
Operations which the doctor recommends depends on the type of thyroid cancer or the size of cancer. It also depends on whether cancer has spread beyond the thyroid and the results of an ultrasound exam of the entire thyroid gland.
Patients need to stay three days in the hospital and seven days outside the hospital after the surgery. Thyroid Cancer treatment involves Thyroidectomy followed by Radioiodine Therapy. The cost of just Thyroidectomy ranges from USD 3,318 to USD 5,973 in India. Depending on the stage of cancer and the age of a patient, the success rate is 98%.
