ASD Closure is a procedure carried out to repair atrial septal defects, i.e. a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. It is a condition present at birth. ASDs can be closed surgically by simply sewing them closed or, by patching them up with the patient’s own tissue or synthetic material, in case of larger ASDs.
It’s not known why ASDs occur; however, some congenital heart defects appear to run in families and sometimes occur with other genetic problems, such as Down syndrome.
