Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an advanced IVF procedure in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg. The technique is implemented to prepare the gametes for the obtention of embryos that may be transferred to a maternal uterus. During the procedure, a tiny needle, called a micropipette, is used for injecting a single sperm into the centre of the egg. The fertilized egg (an embryo) grows in a laboratory for 1-5 days before it is transferred to the woman’s uterus.
