Modified Radical Mastectomy is a surgical procedure for removing the entire breast including the breast tissue, areola, skin, nipple, and axillary lymph nodes. During the procedure, the specialist doctor makes marks on the chest for the incisions followed by pulling back the skin for removing the breast tissue. They may also remove lymph nodes from underarms. The entire procedure takes around 2-4 hours and it is performed under general anaesthesia. An experienced oncologist with expertise in performing similar surgeries should be preferred for the procedure. The 20-year survival rate following Modified radical mastectomy remains around 40%. The recovery time varies from person to person and on the severity of the condition. In some cases, the doctor may also perform chemotherapy post-treatment.
