Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that shows how well blood flows through (perfuses) the heart muscle. It can show areas of the heart muscle that aren’t getting enough blood flow. This test is often called a nuclear stress test and it can also show how well the heart muscle is pumping. During the procedure, a tiny amount of a radioactive substance called a radioactive tracer is used. The tracer travels through the bloodstream and is absorbed by the healthy heart muscle. On the scan, the areas where tracer has been absorbed look different from the areas that did not absorb it.
