An Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a small battery-powered device placed in your chest to monitor your heart rhythm and detect irregular heartbeats. ICDs are useful in preventing sudden death in patients with known, sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. It is a small device about the size of a normal pocket watch. Newer-generation ICDs may have a dual function which includes the ability to serve as a pacemaker.
If an abnormal heart rhythm is detected, the device will deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat if your heart is beating chaotically and much too fast. ICD Implantation in India costs around USD 4,645 – USD 5,973. You’ll be asked to stay 3-5 days at the hospital while full recovery might take about 4-6 weeks.
