Spinal Fusion Surgery can be performed at any level in the spine and prevents any movement between the fused vertebrae. The basic goal is to fuse two or more vertebrae together so that they heal into a single, solid bone. The procedure is done to eliminate painful motion or to restore stability to the spine. Spine surgery is typically recommended only when your doctor can pinpoint the source of your pain.
Spinal fusion is generally a safe procedure. However, as with any surgery, spinal fusion carries the potential risk of complications such as infection, poor wound healing, blood clots, etc.
Spinal fusion surgery can take as little as 2 ½ hours, and as long as 6 or 7 hours, occasionally even longer. How long it takes depends on the number of vertebrae being fused, how badly the vertebrae are diseased, whether spinal nerves need to be decompressed, and whether there is scarring from prior surgeries.
Studies indicate that the patient’s pain is improved by about 60 per cent to 70 per cent after spinal fusion surgery.
The Average cost of this procedure is around USD 5,309 in India, but it can go much higher.
